Bamboo shoot, commonly used in some Asian cuisines, is available in frozen and canned form throughout the year. Bamboo shoots have a very important characteristic which is unknown to many people. These sprouts are low in calories. About 100 grams of the shoot contains only 27 calories.

Sprouts contain a lot of fiber, which can help a person lose weight. It also helps with digestion, cures constipation, and is good for the digestive system as a whole. Having bamboo shoots is a natural way to lower bad cholesterol levels in the body. They are high in potassium and can help maintain blood pressure. The antioxidants present in the shoots help fight deadly diseases like cancer and also strengthen the immune system. Bamboo shoots have a cooling effect on the body. They are used in some herbal medicines used to decrease gallbladder spasms.

They can be cooked in many varieties to suit your taste.

Remove the cover from the shoots. Take the portion that is tender and boil it in water for 20 to 25 minutes and then rinse it. The shoots that are cooked can be taken with the sautéed vegetables as well as the pork, tofu and chicken. Add the sprouts to salads for a change.

Cook spinach in peanut oil and put the slices of shoots with peppers and salt. You can add thin slices of bamboo shoots in vegetable soups. You can use canned or fresh bamboo shoots for this purpose. If you are using canned sprouts, be sure to keep any unused sprouts in a bowl of water in your refrigerator to prevent spoilage.
